The Conquerors story

Every church has a story. Ours began with a step of faith-and it is still unfolding today.

From a small storefront in Detroit to our campus in Clinton Township, the story of Conquerors Church is a story of faith, perseverance, and the goodness of God. We have experienced growth, faced hard decisions, and started again. Through every chapter, God has been our shield and our strength.

It began in March 1976. After faithfully serving at St. Mark Church of God in Christ, my father, Elder Wilbert Curtis Moore, and my mother felt led by God to start a church. Their heart was to teach His Word and serve the surrounding community. They called it New Revelation Church of God in Christ.

The first congregation was made up of family and close friends. My parents prayed and searched for a place to gather. They found a small storefront at 13114 Puritan Avenue in Detroit. On the first Sunday of June 1976, the church held its first service there.

A small beginning. A faithful commitment. And room for God to work.

Over the next decade, the congregation grew to more than 150 people. The vision was reaching beyond the walls of that storefront. In July 1985, the church purchased the building next door and expanded its worship space.

Then came a deeply personal turning point.

In January 1999, after facing a debilitating illness, my father, Pastor Moore, preached his final Sunday sermon. Its title was "I Fought My Fight!" He passed away that June. Before his passing, he asked the church to receive me, his son, Samuel "Sam" Allen Moore, as his successor. In August 1999, I was ordained and appointed to lead the church.

It was my turn to carry forward the foundation my parents and this church family had laid.

I came with fresh energy and a vision for reaching people in new ways. The ministry became known as Conquerors of Faith Church of God in Christ. Through dynamic preaching, warm fellowship, and a commitment to spiritual growth, the church welcomed people from different walks of life.

But the journey ahead would require another step of faith.

In 2008, I sensed God leading our church to move. The congregation was established. To many, leaving did not make sense. I hesitated, and over time, our congregation declined to fewer than 100 people.

In early 2009, I decided to move forward, even though not everyone was ready to go. My final sermon at Puritan Avenue was called "I See a Church." It was a declaration of faith in what God was calling us toward-even before the next location was clear.

In 2010, my wife, Lady LaShawn, and I launched Conquerors Church in Macomb County with a non-denominational vision and just 25 people.

Twenty-five people! A new beginning. And a vision that kept moving.

For a time, we gathered in a hair salon while searching for a permanent home. That home came at 33800 Gratiot Avenue, near Target, in Clinton Township.

The owners invested more than $120,000 in renovations. New electrical work, fire-rated walls, accessible restrooms, a café, and a glass entryway helped create a welcoming ministry space.

There was room for about 142 people. Within a year and a half, the congregation had grown to more than 300. One Sunday service became two, and Saturday services were added as well.

Special services sometimes moved to the AMC Theater. By the fifth year, more than 500 people had attended Conquerors within a 60-day period.

When the lease ended and the property was no longer available, the theater became a temporary gathering place while the church searched for its next home.

That search led to a building in Roseville, near Sam's Club. It had been on the market for more than two years when Conquerors purchased it.

A dedicated group of men and I worked steadily to prepare the building. We created a worship space for about 160 people, added a youth area, and reopened a child care center. That center would become an important part of the ministry's service to children and families.

During the COVID years, church growth slowed. Yet the child care ministry continued serving families. A free GSRP preschool program for four-year-olds was added, and the work with children kept expanding.

Then... another door opened.

After an unexpected tax challenge at the Roseville property, I felt led to seek a new location. I visited Clinton Township and asked about available property. At first, the staff had nothing that matched what we needed. But a township planner overheard the conversation and suggested Baker College.

Lady LaShawn and I toured the campus. The right building was not obvious at first. After returning to review the blueprints, I saw what I had missed: a building that fit the vision.

The opportunity had opened just days after another deal on the property fell through.

We received the keys in December 2022 and moved into the campus in 2023.

Today, the church serves from approximately 33,000 square feet, with two levels, a commercial kitchen, expanded worship seating, and a modern stage. Little Conquerors Schools has also grown, with capacity for more children and programs that include GSRP and Early Head Start.

And the vision keeps moving.

Conquerors is developing expanded after-school opportunities and helping connect families with practical support. Resource fairs, student backpacks, and mobile community services are part of that work. Dozens of people have been baptized at our current location.

Through our partnership with Forgotten Harvest, we help feed hundreds of people each week. It is one way we put our faith into action and respond to real needs in our community.

Conquerors has also been featured on Channel 7 News as a community-minded church serving people in Clinton Township who need support.

From fireworks events to drone shows and jazz shows, Conquerors has been there-bringing people together and creating opportunities for our community to connect.

And we are looking ahead with expectation. Stay tuned-there's more to come!

Behind every building and every move are people: families served, children supported, and lives touched by the love of Jesus Christ.

That is why Conquerors exists. Our mission is to Magnify God, Maximize Purpose, and Mobilize People. We want to honor God, help people grow in their purpose, and put faith into action through service.

We honor the generations who laid the foundation. We celebrate the work happening now. And we look ahead with expectation.

You are getting to know a church whose story is still being written. We invite you to explore, ask questions, and consider what your next step might be.

God has been faithful. And the best... is still to come!
