Help the service feel welcoming and orderly
Ushers help guests and regular attenders enter, find a place, and move through the service with confidence. The role combines hospitality, awareness, and teamwork. The exact usher positions and procedures are set by your team leader; your Shadow Serve is where you learn the flow used at Conquerors Church.
1. Learn your post before service
At your scheduled arrival time, check in with the usher leader. Learn where you are assigned, how to communicate with the team, and what to do if you need help or must step away. Ask the leader to show you any approved seating guidance, accessibility options, service materials, or other procedures that apply to your position.
Do not create your own rules about seating, entry, or access. Follow the leader's instructions and the church's established procedures.
2. Guide people with courtesy
"Let all things be done decently and in order."
Offer a greeting and ask whether someone would like assistance. Give clear directions and allow people time to move at their own pace. If you are helping someone find a seat, offer choices when available instead of making assumptions about where they should sit. Ask before physically assisting or moving someone's belongings or mobility device.
If a guest has a request you cannot answer, connect them with the usher leader or the appropriate team. Do not promise an accommodation, reserved seat, or exception unless the leader has approved it.
3. Support service transitions
During the service, stay aware of the room and follow the leader's cues. Help guests enter or exit quietly when appropriate, keep walkways clear, and avoid blocking sight lines. If your team has a specific process for seating late arrivals, offering materials, or supporting transitions, learn and follow it during your Shadow Serve.
Make changes only within your assignment or at the leader's direction. If a situation becomes distracting or someone needs help, alert the leader discreetly and follow their guidance.
4. Keep safety and access in mind
Notice blocked aisles, spills, crowded areas, or other conditions that could create a risk. Do not block doors or accessible routes with people or equipment. Report hazards promptly to your leader. If someone is injured or there is an urgent safety issue, follow the church's emergency procedures and seek appropriate help.
Protect people's privacy. Do not draw public attention to a guest's medical, mobility, or personal needs. Ask what assistance they prefer and involve your leader when the request is outside your role.
5. Finish with a clear handoff
At the end of your assignment, follow the leader's direction about helping guests exit, returning materials, resetting the area, or handing off to another team. Tell the leader about any concern or unresolved request. Do not leave your post until you have checked out or been relieved according to the team's process.
During your Shadow Serve, learn:
- Where to report and how usher assignments are given.
- How the team communicates and signals during service.
- What the church's seating and accessibility procedures are.
- How late arrivals, guest requests, and service transitions are handled.
- What to do if you notice a safety issue or need to step away.
After shadowing, debrief with the usher leader. Ask questions, confirm any additional training, and wait for the leader to confirm when you are ready to serve in your assigned role.
