Excellence in Serving

Excellence is not perfection. It is the care we take to be prepared, dependable, and thoughtful as we serve God and people.

What excellence means

When people hear the word excellence, they may think it means doing everything flawlessly. That is not the standard God asks of us. Excellence is a heart posture: offering our best with the time, gifts, and resources God has given us. We will make mistakes as we learn. We can still serve with care, humility, and a willingness to grow.

Excellence is not perfection. Excellence is love expressed through preparation, care, and follow-through.

1. Prepare before you serve

1 Corinthians 14:40 (KJV)
"Let all things be done decently and in order."

Preparation helps a team serve people instead of scrambling at the last minute. Know your arrival time, understand your assignment, and bring what you need. If you are unsure about a process, ask your leader before service. A few minutes of preparation can help create a calm, welcoming experience for everyone.

2. Be dependable and communicate early

Proverbs 22:29 (KJV)
"Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings."

Dependability is one way we show respect for God, our teammates, and the people we serve. Keep the commitments you accept. If illness or an unexpected conflict affects your availability, contact your team leader as soon as you can. Do not wait until the last minute or assume someone else will cover your role. Early communication gives the leader time to respond and arrange support.

3. Notice the person in front of you

Tasks matter because people matter. Excellence includes paying attention: welcoming someone who looks unsure, protecting a child's safety, keeping shared spaces ready, and speaking respectfully when a concern comes up. Follow your team's guidelines, protect private information, and bring problems to the right leader instead of discussing them where guests can hear.

4. Keep learning and work as a team

No one serves perfectly every time. Receive coaching with humility, ask questions, and make the adjustment next time. Offer help when you can, and let your leader know when you need help. We serve with excellence when each person does their part and supports the whole team.

A simple excellence check

  • Prepared: Do I know where to be and what to do?
  • Present: Am I focused on my role and the people around me?
  • Dependable: Have I kept my commitment or communicated a change early?
  • Teachable: Am I willing to receive guidance and keep growing?

Before each serving opportunity, take a moment to check in with yourself. You do not have to do everything. You can do your part faithfully, ask for help when needed, and keep growing.

Pause and reflect

Take a moment to consider these questions. You can write your answers in your notes or discuss them with your team leader.

  1. Which part of the excellence check comes most naturally to you?
  2. What is one practical step that would help you feel more prepared to serve?
  3. If something changes and you cannot serve as scheduled, who will you contact and when?
